Commentary on the Rash of Beheadings in the News

The reports on the beheadings we’ve been seeing in the news lately, although horrific, is nothing new. This is what comes out of an evil heart, devoid of God. The Bible speaks specifically of at least three beheadings: John the Baptist’s, King Saul’s son, and those who were beheaded for the witness of Jesus.

1. —> King Herod had John the Baptist beheaded at the request of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. John the Baptist stood up and told the king that it was wrong for him to have his brother’s wife. This evil adulteress then conspired to have John killed. Because of a promise he had made in haste to Herodias’ daughter, the king sent and had John beheaded in prison (Matt. 14:10, Mark 6:27).

2. —> When two men, thinking they could receive a reward of King David for killing his enemy, went and beheaded King Saul’s son, Ishbosheth, while he lay in his bed, King David became angry with them and had them killed for killing an innocent man in his own house upon his bed (2 Samuel 4).

3. —> And finally, the Bible speaks in Revelation 20 about the souls of those who were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, who did not bow down to the image of the beast or take his mark in their foreheads, or in their hands. These beheaded witnesses will reign with Christ for a thousand years, during His millennial reign.

I’m sure these were not the only such killings, but these are the ones I am aware of being addressed directly in the Bible.

We have seen several news reports in the last few weeks of evil hate groups, and their supporters, beheading innocent people. This is all done in the name of their god, or their religion, which compels men to perpetrate the unthinkable on the innocent. They have become convinced that this is their destiny and that they will be rewarded in the afterlife.

What’s behind such hateful rhetoric? Or, should I say who is behind it? That evil snake — Satan. He is a liar, a deceiver, and a murderer. He has blinded the hearts of men, causing them to believe a lie, and has manipulated them to do his bidding. He’s pulling the strings, and I believe, building up his army of evil henchmen to one day do battle against Jesus Christ and His holy army. But, this is one battle they will NOT win, for Jesus Christ will destroy them all with the sharp sword that proceeds out of His mouth — The Word of God (Revelation 19). The very thing that Satan and his evil forces have been fighting against will be used to destroy them.

Prayer Works!

Plug into the Power of Prayer

In the meantime, we (the church of God) must stay prayerful. We should never fear the enemy because he is already a defeated foe. But, we also must not let our guards down because the devil is waiting to pounce on us and destroy us the moment we do.

Continue to pray that God’s word will have free course on the earth, and that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Pray for peace and that those who are walking in darkness will become exposed to, and changed by the light.

As always, remember to keep your family and loved ones, and God’s people covered in prayer. Pray that they will be saved, and stay saved. Pray that they would surrender themselves as willing vessels to be used by God, for His glory.

Pray for those who are the most vulnerable in our society: children, women, widows, orphans, the elderly, and the poor. Pray for God’s protection to cover and keep them.

And pray for the families that have been directly affected by these heinous crimes. Pray that they might forever carry their loved ones in their hearts and not allow this crime to make them bitter or hardened. And pray for sensitivity for those around them, and of those who are reporting these crimes. May Godly comfort forever overtake them. And may these tragic events only push them closer to God and not away from Him. (Amen.)

Thanks, Jeanita. You has shared some powerful truths from God’s word that I will take to heart. In my busyness, I have neglected to pray for the group commiting these crimes and for the family of those who were killed. I must pray not to become blind or deaded to the senseless violence in this world unless it touches me personally. None of us can run or hide as evil touches us all in some kind of way. Thanks for encouraging us to move forward in prayer and warfare in the strength of Jesus Christ. Continue to be the Jeremiah… Read more »

Thank you so much for your prayers, Jackie. I know in my heart that God’s message is not lost. I only pray that it gets through to people before it’s too late. We’ve become distracted — with senseless things. I know that not everyone will heed God’s warnings and admonitions; some will be hopelessly lost. I sometimes feel like I can’t reach/help everyone. But, in my spirit God is showing me that some are hearing, and their hearts are turning toward Him. I pray that His mercy endures forever.
