Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Wildfires, oh my! Why, oh Why?

You’d have to be living under a rock not to have taken notice of the recent natural disasters that have taken place here in the United States, and around the world.

Just this morning I heard of a 5.5 magnitude earthquake in South Korea.

Just a few days before that there was a 7.0 earthquake in Iran and Iraq. At last count, there were over 300 people dead, and thousands more injured.

And who can forget the recent hurricanes this year: Harvey, Irma, Jose, Maria, and more. As a result of these hurricanes, scores of people have been displaced from their homes, lost loved ones, and had their lives ripped apart by the storms.

And some Californians have just been devastated by wildfires. Many people lost their homes, but were grateful to have escaped with their lives.

What’s going on here? Why does their appear to be an increase in natural disasters of late?

Scientists would have you believe that it is a result of Global Warming, also known as climate change. Global warming is essentially the earth heating up as a result of humans releasing heat-trapping gases as we use up energy to power our modern lives. This is quite possible. We’ve been hearing warnings for years that the earth is growing increasingly warmer. That this will cause certain natural disasters to increase. That everyone should care about Global Warming.

But earthquakes, hurricanes, and even wildfires are nothing new.

In fact, in 1906, San Francisco, California woke up to a 7.8 earthquake which left about 3,000 people dead, and roughly 28,000 buildings destroyed.

This earthquake sticks out because there were prophets of God at the time who were warning Californians prior to the earthquake that a great earthquake was coming. But as is often the case, these warnings often go unheeded as men and women are busy worrying about the cares of the day. And I’m sure some just didn’t believe it. An earthquake would be too much of a distraction for the people of California at that time. They were busy with other things.

But the earthquake did happen, and many people lost their lives as a result of it.

The Bible says that the earth is in birth pains, groaning out in pain to be released from its present suffering.

Romans 8 (Amplified Bible)

18 For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us!

19 For [even the whole] creation [all nature] waits eagerly for the children of God to be revealed.

20 For the creation was subjected to frustration and futility, not willingly [because of some intentional fault on its part], but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope

21 that the creation itself will also be freed from its bondage to decay [and gain entrance] into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

22 For we know that the whole creation has been moaning together as in the pains of childbirth until now.

23 And not only this, but we too, who have the first fruits of the Spirit [a joyful indication of the blessings to come], even we groan inwardly, as we wait eagerly for [the sign of] our adoption as sons—the redemption and transformation of our body [at the resurrection].

24 For in this hope we were saved [by faith]. But hope [the object of] which is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he already sees?

25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait eagerly for it with patience and composure.

Are you groaning in pain to be released from the bondage of these earthly and corruptible bodies? For those of us who are among the household of faith know that once Jesus returns we will shed these earthly bodies, and take on incorruptible bodies that will never age, decay, or die.

Our souls are groaning out as in the pains of birth to be released from its oppressive bondage to this sinful flesh. When we are rescused from these corruptible bodies, our new bodies will never die. There will be no more gray hair, wrinkled skin, arthritis, missing teeth, thinning hair, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease. This will all be over.

Do you know that there are no handicap stickers in heaven? No sickly people. No crippled folks. No lame or deaf people dwell in heaven. What a glorious day this will be!

Hang in there. Keep looking up. Your redemption is nearer than you first believed!

Be blessed, everyone!
